Garlic is considered a home treatment to try at midnight when you can’t get the help of your dentist. It is proven from the clinical point of view that it is effective in relieving toothache. Do you know why? Because allicin found in garlic is the main compound known for its antibiotic activity. This is why garlic is known as one of the best natural antibiotics for tooth infection.

Fresh or powdered garlic?

Raw garlic eases pain, whereas the powered ones won’t!

If fresh garlic isn’t available, then go for the powdered garlic, but it won’t help ease the pain as compared to the raw garlic because dry garlic contains a lower range of allicin, which works as an antibiotic. Fresh garlic is useful when it’s chewed, sliced, crushed, or chopped because the allicin is formed during that process, and it remains for a short period (use it at the same time). All the methods leave a garlic smelled breath, so one has to bear it as long as the dentist’s office is not open.

How to use garlic for tooth pain:

There are several ways to try garlic for toothache, such as chewing the clove, making its paste, cut or chop it (The purpose is to release the allicin compound). All the methods are capable enough as long as it’s a fresh garlic clove.

1) Chewing the clove:

Put a fresh garlic clove and gently chew it on the painful tooth. Chewing will release the active compound i.e. allicin which is used for antibiotic activity. Antibiotics will kill the bacteria from the inside of the tooth and relief the pain. And then leave the clove on the affected tooth.

2) Making a paste of garlic clove:

Crush the garlic clove with the use of mortar or the back of a spoon (whichever is convenient). Add a pinch of salt to the paste to make it more useful (as salt is also antibacterial so it will find relief to inflammation). Apply this paste on the infected tooth using a cotton swab or even your finger.

Precautions:

  • Do not overfill the affected tooth with garlic paste so that it gets stuck into it in case of a cavity.
  • Avoid using this remedy if you’re allergic to garlic.
  • Avoid using too much of the paste as it may cause heartburn.

Although one can use garlic for toothache as a first aid to relief pain but we strongly recommend to seek medical advice immediately if toothache persists for a longer period.
